On Fremont

I'm not sure if this is Fremont Street in San Francisco or not, but I've dubbed it as such for this little palette knife composition.  

Hill City Glare

This is a palette knife painting of a particularly enchanting view of San Francisco with the East Bay hills in the distance, based on a "drive-by shooting."  I got two shots from it, each slightly different.  I may paint the other scene at some point.  Updated 3/27:  I made a few minor tweaks to the foliage here and there.

This is another in a series of urban scenes I've been painting lately, done mostly with a palette knife.  Updated 8/1/2025:  I toned down some of the oranges to draw more attention to the tower.

Emerald City

With all I've got going on right now, it's a miracle I've done any painting at all.  I might spend more time on this one later, but for now, I'm finished with it.  This is a scene I pass frequently on my way into San Francisco.  It's a view from the freeway looking east after passing through the bridge toll.  I love those curved streetlights.  Updated 5/21/2025:  I felt the need to warm up the green in the mid-distance.  I also added some pink highlights to the copse at the right end.   

Morning Commute

This painting of my morning commute to work in San Francisco was done from a poor quality photo I took from my car with an old point-and-shoot camera.  I challenged myself to see if I could still produce a viable painting from it.  I'm happy with the overall composition, although it proved nearly impossible to get an accurate photo of the painting, since it was done on a smooth pre-gessoed panel that made the paint look slick and shiny.

Here's another attempt at a cityscape, this one of downtown San Francisco at night.  This type of urban one-point perspective scene is new to me and quite challenging, so it's a useful learning experience.

Lightning Up the Sky

This night scene is of a neighbourhood in San Francisco in August when California was hit by thousands of lightning strikes, precipitating the devastating fires that followed.  I keep thinking about the symbolism of lightning in this upside down year and the image of the Tree of Life upended.  Curious how eerily lightning resembles an upside down tree with all its branches.
