On Fremont

I'm not sure if this is Fremont Street in San Francisco or not, but I've dubbed it as such for this little palette knife composition.  

Hill City Glare

This is a palette knife painting of a particularly enchanting view of San Francisco with the East Bay hills in the distance, based on a "drive-by shooting."  I got two shots from it, each slightly different.  I may paint the other scene at some point.  Updated 3/27:  I made a few minor tweaks to the foliage here and there.

Transitory

This is a scene from New York City back when yellow cabs were ubiquitous and helped define the color character of the city.  That iconic yellow no longer predominates like it once did.  Everything in this world is transitory.

Slick City at Sunset

This is an absracted cityscape that I worked on months ago, then paused.  Looking at it now, I'd say it's finished, or maybe it's just that I'm finished with it.  Either way, voila!

Emerald City

With all I've got going on right now, it's a miracle I've done any painting at all.  I might spend more time on this one later, but for now, I'm finished with it.  This is a scene I pass frequently on my way into San Francisco.  It's a view from the freeway looking east after passing through the bridge toll.  I love those curved streetlights.  Updated 5/21/2025:  I felt the need to warm up the green in the mid-distance.  I also added some pink highlights to the copse at the right end.   

Hastings at Dusk

I painted this scene of a sunset in Hastings, U.K. from a photo I cribbed from my Facebook feed just because I I loved the colors in it.  I distilled it down to the basics to simplify the composition.  Needs a couple tweaks, but otherwise I'm happy with it.  

I've been relegated to doing only small works since last November, ever since my pet sitter went out of commission.  I cannot work in the studio with my dog there, where she paces incessantly, which drives me nuts.  And I cannot work on larger pieces when I cannot work back-to-back 6-hour days minimum.  So for the time being, I must work at home instead where I only have a tabletop easel.  Looking forward to the day when I can sink my teeth into larger works again.

Morning Commute

This painting of my morning commute to work in San Francisco was done from a poor quality photo I took from my car with an old point-and-shoot camera.  I challenged myself to see if I could still produce a viable painting from it.  I'm happy with the overall composition, although it proved nearly impossible to get an accurate photo of the painting, since it was done on a smooth pre-gessoed panel that made the paint look slick and shiny.

Here's another attempt at a cityscape, this one of downtown San Francisco at night.  This type of urban one-point perspective scene is new to me and quite challenging, so it's a useful learning experience.

Been to Church

This was a quick exercise I made for myself to see how fast I could recreate a painting I had found online of what looked like a cathedral on a misty day framed by greenery, branches, and a few springtime blossoms.  I gave myself an hour and was very happy with the result.  My thanks to whoever the artist was!

Le Champs-Élysées Réinventé

This was an attempt at an abstract iteration of a landscape which I did for my UNM class.  I couldn't help but be influenced by the hot colors I see in Taos, not only in the vivid sunsets but also in much of the art I see in galleries around town.  I had intended to warm up my palette after leaving the cool blues and greens of California behind, but I think I can dial it back a bit now, as this is a bit over-the-top, even by my standards.  Still, I do find the two abstract compositions rather compelling and might make an effective diptych.  I include the original to show the springboard I started with in this experiment.
