A Heart of Gold

oil on panel, 24" x 18"

This painting has been in the making for a while.  It was a slow process as I sat with it and pondered how I wanted to paint it and what I wanted to say through it.  I'm happy with the result.

Seated Nude

oil on panel, 20" x 20"

This is the more or less final version of a painting I've been working on that I've gotten guidance with from a great painter, Jacob Dhein.  I had seven sessions with it, each one clocking in at about two hours.  So, about 14 hours spent on this painting, which is more than I usually spend on any single painting.  I was trying to incorporate more abstract elements and I am happy with the result.

Nude Study - 4.27.2023

oil on canvasboard, 16" x 8"

This nude study is based on a painting by Guillaume Seignac, entitled "The Awakening of Psyche."  I'm planning to attend a figure painting workshop this summer and feel the need to paint nudes to kind of get in shape for the workshop.

After Matisse, Reclining Nude

acrylic on canvas paper, 12" x 18"

This is a quick study that I rendered for a larger painting I envision that may not look much like this one when I'm done.  This was just to get familiar with the figure's contours.  I wanted an elongated torso a la Modigliani, so I exaggerated it on this figure based on the Matisse sculpture "Reclining Nude."

Garden of Earthly Delights

oil on panel, 16" x 12"

This painting was inspired by the work of Flora Yukhnovich, a British painter who pushes disrupted realism to a new level.  After reading about her and pouring over her pieces, I felt like playing with paint and pushing the boundaries of realism myself.  It was fun and freeing, and I plan to do more of it!

Down in Dreamland

oil on canvas, 20" x 30"

I've had it in mind to do this painting for a long time, so it shouldn't have surprised me how quickly it came about.  I had done a loose digital version of this figure a long while back that I quite liked, but I'm happy with this version, too.  My aim was to evoke a sense of deep relaxation, and I achieved that, at least to my satisfaction.

UNM Nude Study

acrylic on canvas, 30" x 40"

This was the result of a 2-1/2 hour session with a rubenesque model at the University of New Mexico.  It is the largest and, for its size, quickest figurative painting I've done to date.  It was my first day in class and the only session I got with the model, so no refinements on this one.  Still, it was a fun exercise.

Backlit Nude

acrylic on canvas panel, 14" x 11"

This painting was fun to do, using only Indian yellow, terracotta (a muted orange color produced by LUKAS), ivory black, plus white.  The mix of black and white to get gray in semi-shadowed areas like her upper right arm look bluish next to the warm colors of her skin in direct light.

Monica

oil on canvasboard, 14" x 11"

This tonal study was an exercise in black and white, for which I used ivory black, payne's grey, and titanium white.

Bunny

oil on canvas, 16" x 8"

I was in the mood for a nude, so here she is.  This was done mostly with a brush, using a palette knife in a couple spots only.  I miss oil painting, and I miss painting with brushes.  Note to self:  do some more.

Seated Nude Study

acrylic on canvas paper, 12" x 10"

This was a quick tonal study of a nude that I have had in mind to do a painting of for quite some time.

I have been in limbo for the past month, as I had to move out of my beloved art studio and into a smaller space on the same property.  They just installed electricity in the unit and now I await the installation of a sink and the removal of their storage items.  I will likely be able to set up my space early next week, which I am anxious to do.  Although smaller, it will be warmer, and the light is just as good.  I will also be able to share the space and yet retain privacy, something I could not do in the other space.

Portrait No. 15

acrylic on canvas, 12" x 9"

This was a one-hour effort, my second try after laboring for two hours over a full body painting of the model that ended up on the cutting room floor, so to speak.

Island Girl

acrylic on canvas, 16" x 12"

This was painted from a live model last weekend in a 2.5 hour session.  There were two models and I wish I could have painted both, but I ran out of time.

A Prayer for Christine

acrylic on canvas panel, 9" x 12"
NFS

This was painted while my housemate and friend Christine was having breast reconstruction surgery after breast cancer.  It is going to live with her now, and I am very pleased.

Nude Blonde

iPad painting, 14" x 10"

Another iPad sketch in preparation for a figure painting workshop this weekend.
