Here's another portrait study taken from the BBC's Portrait Artist of the Year. The sitter was Pam Hogg, a British clothing designer. She was an interesting subject, which everyone picked up on. I'm thinking of doing a larger portrait of her from the same angle. We'll see...

I thought I was done with these bird girl portraits, but I guess not. Here's another one that wanted to come through, so I went with it. This will be included in the upcoming show, if it dries in time.
This is another addition to my "bird girl" series of paintings. It was a fun one to do. Updated 5/30/24. I yellowed up the foreground on this painting and added a bit of shadow. I wanted the color scheme to be more distinct primaries. I think doing this has brought out the reds more, and I wanted that red bow to be more noticeable. I'm happy with it overall, especially with her face.
This is a portrait of Anok Yai, a model, in preparation for a narrative figure painting featuring her that I've got in mind as part of my "bird girl" series. Can't wait to do that one!
This is the finished second portrait of Dana in Jacob Dhein's portrait workshop. It was challenging in that the light sources were multiple. I worked from a photo taken indoors during the day and with ambient light sources coming in on three sides, plus an overhead light. I tried to evoke a sense of balance with it, but more importantly with this one, I wanted to capture her innate sweetness of nature, and in that regard, I'm happy with how it turned out. I also tried to incorporate a bit of abstraction but not confident enough with the technique yet to know how far to push it. That's why I'm taking his class. Remains to be seen what Jacob thinks. Update 12.5.2023: Just swapped in the finished portrait after applying a few refinements suggested by Jacob.
I'm already getting nostalgic for summer and it's not over yet. An end-of summer scene here of a girl in an undisclosed European coastal region. The bright yellow umbrella against that dark azure sky really appealed to me.
