Cloudy Landscape Study

oil on canvasboard, 8" x 8"

A palette knife landscape study of clouds.  It's been a hard week, having lost my fur baby of 17+ years a week ago last Friday.  She was my constant companion for nearly all of that time.  I've been grieving ever since.  Forced myself to work in the studio for a wee bit yesterday, when I did this study, and was able to work longer in there today on a new painting.

The Steering Committee

oil on canvasboard, 18" x 24"

This is a painting I've had in mind to do for a long time, simply because I loved the colors of the four steer in combination.  I used a carving block for some of the foreground, one of my new favorite painting tools acquired from a recent workshop, and the palette from that workshop as well.  Ever since this workshop, my output has slowed down considerably in order to apply coats of Liquin in between painting sessions.  The Liquin seals the paint on the surface so that any new paint applied will not mix with the underlying layer(s).  This is especially useful for glazing, a technique that I've never employed until now.  Lots of learning going on in my studio at the moment!

Brown Barn

acrylic on canvas, 12" x 16"

This is a palette knife painting in progress for which I used a reference photo.   Just a few more tweaks here and there, mostly to the mid-ground areas, and I'll call it done.  I do like the overall color harmony in this one, which plays well off the color of the barn.  Updated on 11/21:  the tweaks are in, and I'm calling it done.

Un Reve de Vincent et Paul

iPad painting, 10" x 14"

This digital sketch came about as I was pondering Vincent van Gogh's cypresses and Paul Cezanne's Mont Sainte-Victoire, and their respective palettes, so I combined them in a picture from my imagination.

Porch View, Rose and Tony's Place

acrylic on gessoboard, 12" x 12"

This is a plein air sketch I did the other day at Rose and Tony's house in rural Petaluma after a storm blew through the area.

Wolfy

acrylic on canvas, 12" x 12"

This painting started as an abstract, but of course I couldn't leave well enough alone, and before I knew it, I was channeling Wolf Kahn.  This time I had the sense to leave well enough alone.

Update, 1/7/2018:  Extensive additional information on Wolf Kahn and his work can also be found at www.artsy.net.

Roadside Attraction

acrylic on foamcore, 20" x 20"

This is a palette knife painting I did on foam core, just to see how it felt to paint on that surface.  I like it.

St. Mary's of Nicasio

iPad painting, 10" x 14"

An iPad sketch of the iconic and oft-painted church in the little hamlet known as Nicasio, in Marin County.

Davis Lane

acrylic on canvas, 10" x 20"

Another barn painting, this time on Davis Lane in Penngrove.  The two sheep were hunkered down against this beautiful barn, perhaps awaiting a storm.  The sheep, the gorgeous barn, the sunlight on the distant hills and that neon yellow mustard field in the mid-ground all begged to be painted!
