I tried to create an ethereal quality in the atmosphere of this scene that celebrates the color yellow.  It also celebrates mauve, lavender and orange, a beautiful color combo imho.

West Marin Ranchland

The golden hills of California are so beautiful to me at this time of year, and the local landscape is looking gorgeous right now.  This was painted from a photo, but I'm hoping to get out there and do some on-site painting soon.

Indian Summer Dusk, West of Petaluma

This painting of the hills of West Sonoma County near Petaluma was done from a photo I took in the early evening on my drive home from work recently.  I love the pink and orange hues in it, as I was trying to conveying the warm glow emanating from those velvety hills.  I never get tired of this view.

Denman Cottage View

This palette knife painting is a somewhat idealized interpretation of the view from my cottage on the Denman property.  I painted it from a photo and not from life because, while my camera was off with the colors of the background hills, I quite liked its skewed version, and yet the values were not far off the real thing.  

Estero Creek

This palette knife plein air painting was a rather hurried attempt to capture the golden light of late afternoon in a sweet pastoral setting that I discovered the other day in West Sonoma County.  I will definitely go back for another try, as I found it to be enchanting.  There were also black cows dotted here and there, but I didn't attempt to capture them.  Maybe next time.

View from the Cheese Factory, Looking West in Summer

This simple scene was sketched looking a bit to the right of the last one I did at the Cheese Factory, along the same ridge of hills, and earlier in the day when the sun was at its height.  I may add some cows later.

Barn Conversion

This is cheating a bit by posting a painting I did a while ago.  I thought I had lost it, but I found it yesterday hiding behind another painting, feeling neglected.  I love the simple shapes of barns, so unpretentious.  Using a Wolf Kahn painting of a barn as a compositional springboard, I did make this one a bit more pretentious by converting it to a home in my habitual search for one myself.

Redwood Way II

Another plein air sketch of the pastoral scene I pass on my way to the studio every day.  This one was done in the morning along another stretch of that wide area rife with structures, trees, pasture, distant hills, and cows (when they choose to appear).  Done with a palette knife.

Little Red Shed

This is a little plein air study that turned out much more to my liking than I expected.  Another bucolic scene I pass on my way to the studio.

Reflections on a Barn

This was done in the studio from a photo I had taken during my road trip through Oregon.  I loved the dappled light on the side of the barn created by the trees.

Redwood Way

This began as a plein air painting of a scene I pass by every day on my way to the studio.  Naturally, I had to fiddle with it in the studio later, where I nearly killed it, but I gave it some CPR because I really like that barn in the mid-distance.  The scene is full of subject matter, so I will try this one again.

Wolfy

This painting started as an abstract, but of course I couldn't leave well enough alone, and before I knew it, I was channeling Wolf Kahn.  This time I had the sense to leave well enough alone.
