Buoyant

oil on canvas paper, 12" x 12"

I'm on a roll with these animal sketches.  For this one, my palette consisted of azo yellow, pthalo blue and titanium white.

Udder Relief

oil on canvas paper, 9" x 12"

Yet another cow painting.  I'm on an animal kick right now.

Deux Oiseaux Sur un Bateau

oil on panel, 24" x 18"

I've been sitting with this painting for a while, wondering whether it's finished or not.  I've done quite a few of these "bird girl" paintings and I think there might be one or two more in me before I'm done.

Chaos: The Natural Order

oil on canvas, 20" x 20"

Did a landscape for a change.  This is somewhere in Thailand.  I love these banana leaves.  And the water is very still, making for a conducive atmosphere of inner contemplation.

Flippers

oil on panel, 12" x 9"

This painting presented an interesting conundrum.  I originally painted it in landscape format, which would have rotated this image 90 degrees counterclockwise.  However, I found it a bit disconcerting to paint it in that format, so I flipped it to portrait format, which is the way you are seeing it.  I had painted another pair of swimmers in 2023, called "Floaters," and this one is the next incarnation visiting this theme.  I find these narrative two paintings quite amusing.  Updated 4/9/2025:  I decided I like it better in landscape format, which is how I originally meant it to be.  Works just fine this way.

Poisson Ange

oil on panel, 10" x 10"

Another little fish painting to add to my series of little fish paintings.  What can I say, they're fun!

Tiger in Water

oil on canvaspaper, 12" x 12"

This study of a Royal Bengal tiger was just for fun.  I love the interplay of colors throughout.  Don't have time to do more ambitious pieces right now, just small works that don't take a lot of time to complete.  Temporary circumstances force me to curtail work on larger, more labor-intensive pieces and focus instead on simple studies and paintings that evoke a particular mood.  Update 12.25.2023:  I tweaked this painting a bit in places where I cut into the face with a few green shards to integrate the tiger with the water more and also hopefully emphasize the eye on the left a bit more.

Floaters

oil on panel, 9" x 12"
SOLD

This was just for a hoot.  I tried to keep it kinda loose, but these two do look a bit to me like Barbie and a rather bloated Ken in the pool, ha ha!  Makes me smile, anyway.

Butterfly Koi Study

oil on aluminum panel, 8" x 10"

Here's a quick little fish study, just trying to loosen up here and push some paint around.  This was painted in my new (old) art studio on the property where I live.  I'm excited to be in that bright space once again, having toughed it out the last 3+ years working under artificial light.  Updated 9.28.2022:  Made a few tweaks here and there.

Great White Takes Flight

oil on panel, 14" x 18"

I started this painting of a great white heron taking off from a lagoon a few years ago, then set it aside and forgot about it, until the other day.  Just mainly playing around with color combos on this bird, seeing how far I can push it.

Abstracted Landscape Study 9-16-2021

acrylic on canvas paper, 12" x 12"

This was just a quick study using a palette knife, having a bit of fun using a palette of cad yellow, cad orange, light green permanent, pthalo blue, viridian and ivory black.  I've had very limited time to paint these last few days, so when I went to my easel, I had to work fast and furious.  Let's just say I'm not unhappy with the result.

Tufted Duck

oil on panel, 8" x 10"

I was pulled away from my easel this past week on a project at work, and whenever that happens, I tend to choose simple subjects to get me back in the swing of it again.  This little duck is native to northern Eurasia, and I just love his violet sheen and bright little yellow eye.

Yellow Boat

acrylic on canvas paper, 12" x 12"

This is a scene I painted earlier this year from a photo of Nantes, France.  It speaks to my sense of isolation in this time of COVID.

Rosie

oil on cradled panel, 20" x 16"

It's back to the birds with this painting of a roseate spoonbill wading in shallow waters.  I've been wanting to paint this bird for quite a while, a member of the ibis family commonly found along coastal regions of North and South America.  I just love that long spatulate bill!  And of course, the gorgeous colors of her (his?) feathers.

Black and White in Blue

oil on MDF panel, 24" x 24"
sold

A seemingly perennial work in progress, this is the same heifer as in a previous post, from a different angle.  I think I liked this painting better in its third iteration.  Maybe the cow is trying to tell me something, as in leave me alone!  Can't I just stand here in peace, enjoying a cool drink of water?  We'll see about that.

Bodega Bay View from Doran Bluff

iPad art, 10" x 14"

Another perspective on another day at Bodega Bay, this digital sketch was done from the opposite end of the bay.  I had to work faster than ever, as it appears my dog is losing her patience whenever I whip out my iPad and lose myself in it.  This one took about 5 minutes, a record for me!

Tomales Bay Triangles

oil on linen-mounted gatorboard, 8" x 10"

This is a plein air palette knife painting of a scene that I simplified in order to emphasize the triangular patterns I saw in the cliff, the trees, and the two sailboats floating on a quiet Tomales Bay.  I have to say, it's quite a challenge to paint boats with a palette knife.
