This digital portrait was done from a photo I stumbled on while searching for something else.  It was another artist's painting, I believe, but I could not track down the artist.  I found the portrait mesmerizing and felt compelled to create my own digital version of it.

Fall on Fire

I suppose this little ditty could be called an abstracted landscape.  I used up every scrap of leftover paint on my palette to cover the canvas, thinking at the start about a photo I had just viewed of Central Park in the fall.  Soon after I began, however, the color relationships took over, and I dropped that idea.  I see Wolf Kahn's influence yet again.

Wilson Hill Road Scene II

Another plein air study, this one done from the same pullout along Wilson Hill Road in the Chileno Valley area west of Petaluma, but of a slightly different section of the view.  I intend to revisit this spot again soon, to focus on those beautiful black and white Holstein cows that frequently pass through this valley.  

Supermoon

This is my first attempt at a nocturnal plein air painting, again using only a palette knife.  I really wanted to capture that big round ball of a moon from the vicinity of my art studio, so I tried to work fast and furious as it was rising in the east over the hills of Sonoma.  While my lighting setup enabled me to see the panel well enough (the light source was set on a chair), my palette was in shadow throughout, and so I had to later adjust the values in the studio.  What a challenge!  

Brown Barn

This is a palette knife painting in progress for which I used a reference photo.   Just a few more tweaks here and there, mostly to the mid-ground areas, and I'll call it done.  I do like the overall color harmony in this one, which plays well off the color of the barn.  Updated on 11/21:  the tweaks are in, and I'm calling it done.

Tomales Bay Ridge

Wilson Hill Road Scene

This quickie palette knife plein air study was a race to capture the golden light of dusk before being engulfed in darkness yesterday.  I really wanted to capture the Holstein cows grazing in the foreground but didn't have time.  I hope to return to this spot soon and allow more time to get it done.  Still, it was a good workout.

Gretchen's Near

This is a palette knife study of still water and background values.  I'm quite drawn to distant hills and live in an area that is full of variety in that respect.  This scene, though, reminds me more of those rugged karsts of Guilin, China.

Eucalyptus Stumps

A ten-minute sketch done while walking the dogs.  I love the various subtle colors to be found in eucalyptus trunks.

Tree of Life

I've been wanting to paint this tree for a long time, as it captures my attention every time I drive by this wondrous thing.  Cows frequently gather underneath its shelter, and I love the tunnel that forms from within the curve of its trunk.

I just felt like transporting myself to a fantasy land, and this is where I went with that.  I may have another go at it, but for now, it goes in the time-out room.  I've been reading Hockney's "A Bigger Message" and I can see his influence pretty clearly here.

Preston Point

Giacomini Wetlands

This is an unretouched palette knife sketch (rare for me!) of a scene I've been wanting to paint for a long time.  I'm hoping to return to the scene for another go at it, a constantly changing colorama.  Update, 10/23:  I have replaced the unretouched image I had posted originally with the current one, having tweaked it here and there.

Self Observation

This is a strange little sketch that came from just below my conscious awareness, as I was creating it while listening to a spiritual talk.  I am wanting to push through to new territory in my art, and digital art is a low-risk way of exploring that.  The title came to me from that mindset as well.  A psychiatrist could have a field day interpreting what it all means.

Flaming Archway

Another digital sketch done at Covelo Ranch, where the leaves were already in various stages of yellow, orange and red at the end of September.  This scene looks northward from the house and edge of a side garden toward the razed hay field and hills beyond.

Dogtown Eucs

I was on my way to Bolinas the other day and got stuck in a road construction delay, so I whipped out my iPad and painted the scene to my left.  It made the time go by lickety-split!

Looking North, Covelo Ranch on a Hot Summer Day

This is a palette knife plein air sketch I did in late afternoon the other day at Covelo Ranch, as the heat was just beginning to abate.  That viridian green hay barn in the mid-distance is just beyond the property line of the ranch, and the hot summer sun seemed to intensify its color just before the shade hit its roof.

Reflections on a River

This is now what I would call an abstracted landscape, having messed with an actual landscape painting to the point where it is now almost unrecognizable but seems to have a life of its own.  You just never know.

Urban Wetlands

This is an abstract digital painting I did while half asleep.  I like it and can't explain why.  I suppose it has to do with what's been on my mind lately:  New York City and a local wetlands nature reserve here in Petaluma.

Trees of Covelo Ranch, Summer Impression

Another quickie digital landscape sketch.  This one I was unable to finish on site, but when I looked at it later, I liked it as an abstracted landscape, something I'm wanting to do more of.

September Scene, Point Reyes

It was so hot in Petaluma yesterday, I grabbed the pups and drove to Point Reyes, where it was 13 degrees cooler.  This sketch was a real quickie, less than 10 minutes, executed while we all sat in comfort on a bench in the shade as I gazed at this scene.

Conversation at the Confluence

This painting was done from a photo I had taken of my friends Ron and Marilyn with their dog Dot at the confluence of the Eel and Black Butte rivers in Northern California.  The rocks in shadow on the far bank were actually lighter than the sand mound in the foreground.  The time was that golden hour of a summer day, around 7:00 pm, and I loved the warm and varied colors lit by the setting sun.

A Balancing Act

This, as in all my abstract paintings, emerged gradually, starting with a simple idea, then letting the paint itself take over and talk to me.  I could go on and on with these, but at some point you just have to stop, walk away, and call it done . . . for now.

Lakescape

No particular reference on this one, just using up leftover paint on the palette.  I love Italian cypress trees and lakes, and wanted to convey stillness and light.

Lakeville Poplars

A 10-minute sketch of poplars along a section of Lakeville Highway in Petaluma.  The leaves are turning yellow now, giving the trees a glow around their perimeters, something I find quite beautiful, especially when they sway in the breeze.

Bolinas Lagoon on a Summer Afternoon

A plein air sketch of a section of Bolinas Lagoon in late afternoon, done with a palette knife.  The oranges of autumn are starting to appear along this beautiful stretch of landscape, of which there are many choice views along Olema Bolinas Road.

River Rock Rose

I've been working on several paintings simultaneously, all of which have presented challenges.  One is a closeup of the Eel River near Black Butte River Ranch in Northern California.  I thought I had finished it, but when I looked again with fresh eyes, I felt the need to rework it with a different palette.  Instead of mostly blues, greens and pinks, I want to see what I can do with blues, browns and oranges.  This abstract painting was created using the leftover paint from that one.

Clover Flowers

What do you do when you are sitting on the grass with your iPad and feel uninspired by all the cookie cutter homes around you?  You look down at the little flowers growing at your feet.  So, I focused my attention on these sweet little gifts of nature that humans typically trample on.  I probably killed a few just sitting down to do this sketch.  

Open Door Windows

Once again on a walk with the dogs, I sat on a ledge across the street from the Open Door Christian Church on B Street in Petaluma for this sketch.  

Black Butte River at Dusk

This is a quick sketch done as a loose study for an oil painting which I'm working on now from a photo I took the other day at this beautiful spot at the confluence of the Eel and Black Butte Rivers.  A gorgeous, unpopulated, swimmable place.

On Top of the World

This was done from a photo I had taken up on Pan Toll Road the other day on Mt. Tamalpais.  I just had to bash out a painting of it.  The fog was just beginning to claim the trees in the distance, and I loved the shadow patterns created by those trees, set against the blond hills in the foreground.  

Two Plum Trees

Just playing with color here, using memory and imagination.  This one makes no realistic sense, but I like it anyway.

Pan Toll Road

A quick digital sketch done while sitting on a big rock with the dogs under the shade of a pine tree.  There are dramatic views in all directions from Pan Toll Road in Marin County, especially this time of year, with the fog mingling with the cypress and pine trees and the bleached out hilltops.  

A Monumental Love

This is the finished painting of the one I posted in progress a few days ago, under the working title of  "The Session."  I've now renamed it with the original title I had in mind but had been too timid to claim, until a friend of mind saw the painting and helped me get over that modesty.  Victor, former racehorse, and his beloved friend Marilyn at Covelo Ranch having one of their sessions in a big, grassy field.  

Nicasio Poplars

A plein air study done the other day in the little Marin town of Nicasio, a very popular location for plein air painters, mostly known for the picturesque church nestled against a hillside.  I've painted the church before, but turned my attention this time to a southern view featuring some beautiful glowing poplars. 

Some Kind of Pine

Another 10-minute sketch done whilst on a walk with the dogs.  They are forcing me to work faster, which is probably not a bad thing.   I have no idea what kind of tree this is.  Could be a pine, could be a palm.  Never seen another like it, that I can recall.

The Session

This painting is perhaps 90% done, a training session Marilyn is having with Victor out in the field at Covelo Ranch.  I used a photo taken in the spring when the grass was green and the temperature cool, unlike now when the heat here is unbearably hot, over 100 degrees Fahrenheit much of the time. 

Sheep Family Portrait

A quick palette knife portrait of three sheep at Covelo Ranch, painted from a photo because sheep, like horses and cows, do not sit still long enough to have their portrait painted.  

Night Light

Now for something different, a night-time iPad painting.  Again walking my dog in downtown Petaluma, I thought this might make an interesting composition.  Rather Poe-like, isn't it?  Truth be told, these digital paintings are much easier and quicker to bang out than actual, organic paintings, one of which I've been slaving over the past few days, and I'm still not finished with it.  

Glads In Memoriam

Got a little too frustrated working on this painting, so I wiped it.  I had taken a photo of it at this stage, as I often do, so that when I look back I can feel really bad about what I did.  Instead, I should have just put it in the time-out room.  Lesson learned.

Victory Walk

This is one of the few horse paintings I've done to date.  Just trying to get more familiar with horse shapes and this one in particular, I already have another in mind to do of him.  This is my friend Marilyn's handsome boy Victor, a Thoroughbred and former race horse.  I dare say he's much happier now, living on a big ranch with someone like Marilyn to love and care for him.

Umbrellas of the Theatre District

Yet another umbrella digital painting done while on a walk with my dog.  For this one, we were sitting in an outdoor plaza in downtown Petaluma, in the theatre district.  I was drawn to the tropical colors and angular shapes of this scene.

Koi Pond Impression, Albion

This digital sketch was done while sitting by the koi pond at my friends' Albion residence.  The pond is fairly large (and gorgeous), but in this one I wanted to showcase the beautiful colors in the landscaping around the pond.

Tree Trunks Along the Slough

This palette knife painting was meant to be a study in pinks and browns, but as you can see, I strayed a bit from that idea.  It was done from a photo I had taken at Covelo Ranch in the spring, when the slough was full.  I liked seeing that one tree trunk in the foreground set against the others on the far shoreline of the slough.

Blue Heron at the Pond

Here is another rough palette knife plein air sketch from the same afternoon at the Cheese Factory.  I just had to capture the beautiful blue heron I spotted standing by the pond.  I'm currently back at the Covelo Ranch, churning out more work.  It isn't easy working outdoors in 104 degree weather, wiping sweat droplets off my palette as they fall from my face.  Wow, it's hot here!
